ST. IGNACE, MI -- We found an awesome story to tell you and it comes from St. Ignace.
The football team is still in the hunt for the state championship, but this was a team without cheerleaders up until just a couple weeks ago.
Well, a group of moms just didn't think this was acceptable.
Right now, everyone in St. Ignace is on the football bandwagon. The Saints are undefeated, and play Saturday, one win away from heading to Detroit to play for the state championship.
But with this team, there's a story within a story.
The high school has 215 students, and because of a lack of interest, there hasn't been a cheerleading squad on the sidelines this season. But that all changed several weeks ago.
"I haven't seen a group of moms do what these moms are doing," laughed Coach Marty Spencer.
About 16 mothers get together, do a quick hamstring stretch, put their son's away jersey on, and cheerlead?
"Wow, that is my mom, she's cheerleading, what's going on," laughed Senior Nate Monte.
"To have my mom on the sidelines, it's pretty crazy!" said Senior Chris Gustafson.
And these mothers have dedication. Thursday, the mother cheerleaders put together a pep assembly and believe it or not, they even pulled off a stunt.
Coach said in the past, he typically didn't hear the cheerleaders, but with these mothers on the sidelines, he hears them, because they're bringing back era 1970 vintage cheers. And another thing, his wife is on the sideline, and you can bet he definitely hears that.
“Defense, and hold that line, things you haven't heard in a long, long time from cheerleaders," said Spencer.
Moms will be moms and say they had to do it.
"I know it pumps them up!" said Monte’s Mom Brenda.
"Gives me a little bit of any youth back," laughed Paula Mayer.
“Most kids do anything for their mother; I know I would, so if it gives us that little edge, that's a great thing," said Spencer.
Players say it doesn't get much better than this, well, maybe it does.
“I could ask for a blonde, a brunette, but my mom will do," laughed Monte.
And you can bet the number one fans will be really loud. Good luck St. Ignace.
Saints march in to Traverse City Saturday to take on Fowler.
With a win, the Saints will head to Ford Field to play for the state championship.
