'Let There Be Moms' plans scavenger hunt - Greenville News

On April 15, Let There Be Mom supporters will be lost in downtown Greenville. Armed with riddles, clues and tasks, teams of four will compete in LTBM?s third annual Seek and Snap (digital scavenger hunt fundraiser).

Teams have two hours to ?Seek? the answers to their clues and ?Snap? proof of their find with their digital cameras. The family-friendly event begins at noon.

Teams of four can register online at http://www.lettherebemom.org/, in one of three categories (family, friends or corporate). Registration fees are: $80 donation for family teams and $105 donation for friend/corporate teams. The first entry deadline is March 28.

Let There Be Mom is a nonprofit organization that works to preserve the legacies of moms and dads with life-threatening illnesses.

Adults 50 years of age and up looking for a little competition and a lot of fun can participate in the 2012 Greater Greenville Senior Sports Classic April 16-20.

This annual event planned by Greenville Rec, Senior Action and sponsoring agency BlueCross Blue Shield of South Carolina, offers recreational and Olympic style competition in 16 sports. Events are held at venues throughout the community.

Online registration is available at http://www.greenvillerec.com/. Forms are available at the Rec District Administrative Office, 4806 Old Spartanburg Road, and at Senior Action, 50 Directors Drive. The registration deadline is April 5.

A returning sport this year is swimming at the new Westside Aquatic Complex. New this year is pickleball, a game played on badminton courts with the net lowered to 34 inches with players using perforated plastic ball and paddles.

The sports lineup also includes a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, bowling, billiards, basketball free throw, disc golf, horseshoes, miniature golf and shuffleboard. Participants also may compete in spin casting, hotshot basketball, badminton, table tennis, racquetball (singles), weightlifting and track and field events.

The Greenville Scottish Games return to the Furman University campus May 26, this time as part of a five-day celebration.

An additional element to the Games is Gallabrae, a celebration of Scottish heritage May 23-27.

Gallabrae events include a Highland Fling on Main Street May 23; Celtic music at Downtown Alive May 24; The Great Scot Parade followed by Celtic music on Main Street May 25; the Greenville Scottish Games on the Furman campus all day May 26; and a May 27 celebration that includes amateur athletic competitions and the Dark Corner Moonshine Run.

Lynda Leventis-Wells is the leader of the Greenville Family Partnership?s 2012 board of directors.

Joining Wells as newly elected officers are vice president Julie Carson Bayne, treasurer Mark Thornburgh, and secretary Holli Hargett.

Bill Hawkins and Jim Roten will serve as committee chairs of the 2012 Red Ribbon Classic Golf Tournament; Christine Burnikel and Jodi LaValla will serve as committee chairs of the 2012 Red Ribbon Party/Auction; and Jane Leo will serve as chair of Red Ribbon Scholarship Committee. Pam Wessel, a board member for more than 10 years, is the outgoing GFP board president.

The 27-member board includes three new members: Geri Guy, a teacher at Carolina High School; Dr. John Sanders, a retired orthopedic surgeon; and Jake Van Gieson of NAI Earle Furman.

Greenville Family Partnership/Red Ribbon Works is a nonprofit that works to prevent children and youth from using alcohol, tobacco and other harmful substances.

Local conservation group Upstate Forever, in partnership with Spartanburg County Parks, will hold a day trip to Belmont, N.C., on April 17. The itinerary highlights Belmont?s transition from textile town to vibrant city and its thriving growth and redevelopment.

Local leaders will share how a proactive approach paved the way to the city?s success.
