More moms playing video games - msnbc.com

It's a new trend in gaming. Women and moms are increasingly turning to video games for some release.

"When I have some down time and it's rare when you have two kids and mine are very active, but that's when I do it," Robin Hunt, a mother told KNBC.

Whenever this single mom of two has a spare minute, she is playing one of her favorite online game.

Hunt is not the only mother turning to her mobile device, computer or other gaming console, according to a new survey of 1,200 moms by Mom Central.

"Moms are saying on average they spend 5 hours a week playing games. These games that are more casual like words with friends or drop seven," Stacy Debroff with Mom Central said.

"What the trending is showing is that moms are coming in and out for short periods. In 10 or 15 minutes, when you are waiting for the laundry to finish or you are in the commute home, it's just a way to dive into something that is engaging your mind," Debroff added.

Hunt's son said his mom plays video games so often, he sometimes has to ask her to stop playing and cook dinner.

Hunt admitted to being disconnected sometimes but also finds activities with her family away from her devices.

The survey also showed moms play games with their families on average 3 hours a week.

This mom said she won't give up the more traditional ways of unwinding just yet.

"I pedicured last night and I had my iPad gaming, so I do both," Hunt said.
